Call for Papers

The KU Center for East Asian Studies is pleased to host the 71st Annual Meeting of the MCAA, September 16 – 18, 2022. It will be the first in-person annual meeting since the beginning of the pandemic. We will be joined by Dr. Kamran Asdar Ali, President of the Association for Asia Studies (University of Texas Austin, Anthropology), as our keynote speaker, and Dr. Hiromi Mizuno, President of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (University of Minnesota, History), who will lead the Presidential Luncheon Panel on science, technology, medicine, and environment for Global Asia. Panelists will include Megan Greene (University of Kansas, History), Ian Biard (University of Wisconsin, Madison, Geography), and Susan Burns (University of Chicago, History). The conference will also include workshops and roundtables on book/journal publication, and professional development. We hope you will consider submitting a paper or panel proposal.

We welcome proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers from all disciplines focusing on China and Inner Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, and the Asian Diaspora as well as comparative, inter-Asian, and global Asia topics. We also welcome scholars and students from all regions. Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students (presenting on separate junior scholar panels), as well as independent scholars, are encouraged to share their work, receive feedback, and network at the conference.

  • Individual Papers: Proposals should include (1) Presenter's name, affiliation, position, and contact information, including email addresses, and (2) Paper title and summary (150 words maximum); 

  • Panels and Roundtables: Proposals should include (1) A list of participants, their paper titles, their affiliations, their positions, departments, and their contact information, including email addresses, and (2) A panel summary (250 words max.) that includes a brief description of each paper and makes clear the connection between the papers.
